i posted the following on the Makeup Artists tribe, but got no response... i'm hoping i'll have better luck here.

*****************************************

hi everyone,

i'm new-ish to this industry, and am looking to get my toes/feet in the door, and maybe even get some discounts on makeup and tools.

i've been looking to see where i'd like to work on a part-time basis, that would provide me with opportunities to play with makeup (which i've done before as an image consultant) and *discounts*. it seems as though the higher end dept stores are much more of a commitment in that one has to dress waaay up. this is not so much my "bag." i'd like to work in an environment that is a little/a lot more relaxed.

which brings me to my questions:

does anyone here work for Sephora? has anyone here worked for them? what was/is that experience like? do you have any suggestions/tips/advice on whether or not this might be a good way to get my foot in the proverbial door and get access to discounts? how difficult is it to get a job with them? do they hire part-time employees?

anyone? anyone? :)

thank you...

Hello!

I am new to the Tribe and need some help! I am going to an intentional sex-positive play party this month with a Circus theme.

I want to go the more "modern exotic circus" path (not the traditional clown type stuff)...but I am overwhelmed at the idea of choosing a particular look!!

Could anyone suggest where I might be able to find some pictures of exotic circus type faces?? I have been searching the net, but to no avail...

Thank you!!

i just received a "as a cherished customer and friend of M.A.C." letter in the mail. included was the spring '05 catalogue (revealing the beauty, style and pro-art of M.A.C as well as new products such as fluidline gel liner and the prep+prime collection).

PRO-ART! they aren't kidding! has anyone seen this? it is so beautiful... i wish i could do makeup like that. jeesh!

if anyone else does and needs practice i will gladly be your canvas.

it looks like the spring collection is available as of february 17.

the design of this catalog is amazing - i will probably stick it up on the bookshelf.

i am a nerd - shut up

ok... i didn't want this to happen, but during my last trip to sephora i was shown the new Makeup Forever eyeshadows.

these are brilliant but i can't justify spending the $$ on new eyeshadow colors.

there needs to be a better way to share eyeshadow! someone should invent a little tool to punch out those hard shadow palets. one could then trade them like baseball cards!

i will trade you a mac red and urban decay baby blue for some tony and tina glitter and a makeup forever yellow...

don't listen to me today

makeup & hair suggestions for costume?

In 2 weeks I'm going to a party with a flame/fire theme. I have an idea for the costume, but but I don't know what to do with my face and hair.

I found this cool eastern/cleopatra-looking metal necklace at the gem show this weekend and thought I'd revolve my costume around it. it's a thick choker that fans out about 3inches onto the chest.

thought I'd pair it with this ankle-length, metallic-looking tank dress (like chainmail metallic, not shiny). it's slit up the side so I thought I'd wear my motorcycle boots and go kinda Xena-archeangel-esque. maybe some bands of silver body paint on my arms. maybe get some unique wings.

any suggestions on the makeup & hair?

here's some pics to give you an idea of what I've got to work with hair/face-wise:
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=6&currentoffset=30&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=21&currentoffset=121&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=4&currentoffset=21&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382

I was thinking of doing something somewhere between this:
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=14&currentoffset=79&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382
and this:
http://tucson.tribe.net/template/pub%2CViewPhoto.vm/context/pcard?page=14&currentoffset=82&parentid=76f0d4fd-d3e1-4f50-9b8e-07afe015eaaa&sortby&rows&r=10382

...something simple, not too elaborate. maybe egyptian-esque around the eyes. maybe using little bits of silver paint to give a tribal effect.

if anyone has pics (your own, magazines, fashion, etc) that they'd like to share for inspiration, that's welcome too. :)

as always, thanks you fab dahlings.

Has anybody else tried the Sally Hansen Nail Prisms polish? I picked up a bottle of "pink rose diamond" and it is solid sparkle! It reminds me a lot of MAC "all girl" pigment. Deliciously girly! I had to hold myself back from pouring it all over myself and rolling around. Anybody else tried any other colors?

ideas for Day of the Dead makeup (skeleton)

going to my first All Souls parade this weekend and could use some inspiration and tips.

my makeup skills have seriously dwindled as of late from lack of use. I'd like to make my face suggestive of a skull/skeleton, but not the typical literal execution.
I'm trying to find a balance between abstracting a skeleton face -- so I'm not just 2 eye circles and gridwork teeth like everyone else -- and keeping it from getting too cyber-geisha.

I posted some sketches:
tucson.tribe.net/template/...2CViewPhoto.vm/context/person

I'd love your input or suggestions. even if All Soul's has passed. It's helpful to know what I could've done differently.

If you wanna send links to pics or such, that's also welcome.

thanks. :)

So, what is everybody's manicure routine? How do you keep your polish from chipping? What products do you use?

I start with some inexpensive paint on silk wrap stuff from the drug store, two coats of polish over that, then this super hard top coat called "my nails are sealed". It's all cheap drug store stuff...but works pretty well.

Oh, let us not forget the feet! It's sandal weather...how do you keep your feet soft and lovely?

Lipstick

My favorite is Coty 24. I read about it in an SF Chron comparison review. It's cheap and it stays on a long time, but it's getting harder to find. I only have two shades, neither of which is optimal.

So I'm going to a party tonight and trying the Marlene Dietrich tux thang and my lipstick is the wrong shade. I have another cheapie lipstick in a better shade, but I know it'll come off in 5 min. I hate the mess that shit makes.

If only Trouble were here, I'd have access to the bottomless well of lipstick shades.

Does anyone know of a brand that stays on as well as Coty 24?

I got a tube of Urban Decay XXX shine in UZI. It is super sparkly and tastes minty. Great over lipstick, but doesn't last quite as long as lip glass. It has made it's way into my regular rotation.

New Mac products+New tip

I had a bad day on Friday...so like any good addict, I went and got my make-up done and picked up a few of their new products and a new tip.

New Products:

http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/collections/collection.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY13335
This lip gloss is so damn pretty! I got it in "lusterwhite". It reminds me of diamonds in a bottle! I used it with just a light liner because I had super intense eye make-up and I felt like a princess.

http://www.maccosmetics.com/templates/collections/collection.tmpl?CATEGORY_ID=CATEGORY13336
These shadesticks are really cool too. I got it in "crimsonaire" because I was doing the whole magenta/pink shadow with heavy black liner look. It was great!

Tip: I really wanted dark, smoky liner. She used "smolder" which is an awesome black pencil liner that glides on like buttah. She lined all around my eye and went over that with a black liner shadow called "carbon". Now, this isn't anything new, except she showed me I could actually use carbon on the water line as well to keep the liner from breaking up. I guess carbon is super smooth and works well even on sensitive eyes. It looked really crisp and dark and lasted the entire evening.

ghetto techniques part 1

ok... so, every now and then i want to try something and find that i just don't have the makeup for it. today i really wanted to do heavy reds and i found that i was lacking. so, it was time to improvise.

i found a very rich and vibrant red lip gloss. most glosses don't cover very well and tend to be a bit "thin"... luckily, this one went on lighter than lipstick, but heavier than lip gloss. because it wasn't as thick as lipstick, it allowed me to apply it so that the edges were softer. after applying to the lid with my finger, i took a makeup q-tip and traced the edges. i next took some red foundation (cover girl deep rose) and, using a eyeshadow brush, went over the gloss. this covered so well and allowed the powder to stick to the gloss. the powder also helped set the gloss so that it didn't bleed.

i did the same on the bottom of my eye and used a thin brush to bring the line out.

i put 2 photos in the photo section.

when i do reds, i love the look of Urban Decay's Snow eyeshadow. this was part of a gift set a couple years ago, but it looks brilliant. that is the light yellow color you see in the photo.

surprisingly, i only used these two colors and it turned out really well. fyi: i also used black liquid eyeliner on the top, and lined the inside of my upper lid with a soft black pencil. oh yeah, and black mascara. to highlight the bottom inner eye, i put a dab of silver glitter sparkle pen.

later... just for fun, i took a soft red lipliner (Prestige in Cranberry) and lined the bottom inner eye. i also drew out a design down my cheek. i was totally inspired by MAC obviously. then, i used black liquid eyeliner and followed the red. i posted a couple photos of this too.

i will delete these soon.

so, even though i didn't have a lovely MAC red eye paint for my eyes, i was able to pull out some ghetto moves and do something cool.

i would love to hear some other ghetto techniques

Glitter Eyes

I recently learned how to line my eyes with "glitter brilliance" (a fine loose glitter) from MAC. This literally stays for hours and hours. I suggest trying it when you have lots of time to do your make-up and before you have done the rest of your face, as it may take more than one try. I just lined the top when I went out. I lined the bottom once at home and it looked killer, but really extreme drag queen and I will save that for special occasions.

1.) Do your entire eye makeup except for mascara. Obviously, choose colors that go with the color glitter you have chosen. (I have really light blue eyes so I line my entire eye in dark black liner before putting the glitter on. I find my eyes look to pale and small with just glitter.)
2.) Use a fine liner brush to apply Duo (latex eyelash adhesive sold at the MAC counter) to one eye.
3.) Use an angled liner brush to pick up and carefully dab glitter into the adhesive. Make sure to lightly tap the end of the brush to get off fly-away glitter before you raise it to your face.
4.) Repeat 2 & 3 on other eye.
5.) Let dry and apply mascara.
6.) Remove excess glitter that might have gotten on your cheeks with scotch tape and apply rest of make-up.

Brush Care

I am pretty new to having an expensive brush collection. I'm curious how other people take care of theirs. I use the MAC brush cleaning solution. (I didn't have the best results with plain soap and water.) It's not too expensive....like $10 for a big concentrated bottle. Know any other good brands?

Weekly: I put a couple table spoons in a half a cup of warm soapy water, let them soak, rinse under a warm gentle stream of water, gently remove excess liquid, reshape and let dry on a terrycloth towel.

Daily: I dilute brush cleanser into water and put in teeny spray bottle. I mist each brush I have used and swipe it back and forth on a terrycloth towel.

Taking it all off...

Ok, so now that we have discussed how to make glitter last forever, let's discuss taking it all off. There are two 100% effective, non-irritating methods that I have found. (My eyes are REALLY sensitive to eye make-up remover.)

1.) Vaseline or Abolene. Smear all over eyes and wipe off gently with a tissue or, even better, soft terrycloth towel. I have several dark colors just for taking off make-up. This will leave some residue, no matter how ya do it...so it's a bit better for the end of the night than for re-doing or touch ups. Bonus: when I do this, my eyes feel all hydrated and happy in the morning.

2.) My new absolute favorite: eye wash pads. This was suggested to me by a friend who's husband is an optometrist. They can be purchased in the eye care section (near eye drops and lens care). Some are pre-moistened while others come in a bottle with little dry pads. So far, all have been about equally effective. They are meant for people with goopy eye problems and as a secondary use, makeup remover. They are super gentle and take off what every other eye make-up remover pad would leave behind.

3.) Ok, well I guess I meant THREE methods...but this is a mini method. They make pre-moistened eye touch up q-tips. I love em when doing dark eye make-up powders that fall to my cheeks and under my eyes.
