Sephora...?

topic posted Thu, July 7, 2005 - 12:55 PM by  Ms Hot Tamale
i posted the following on the Makeup Artists tribe, but got no response... i'm hoping i'll have better luck here.

*****************************************

hi everyone,

i'm new-ish to this industry, and am looking to get my toes/feet in the door, and maybe even get some discounts on makeup and tools.

i've been looking to see where i'd like to work on a part-time basis, that would provide me with opportunities to play with makeup (which i've done before as an image consultant) and *discounts*. it seems as though the higher end dept stores are much more of a commitment in that one has to dress waaay up. this is not so much my "bag." i'd like to work in an environment that is a little/a lot more relaxed.

which brings me to my questions:

does anyone here work for Sephora? has anyone here worked for them? what was/is that experience like? do you have any suggestions/tips/advice on whether or not this might be a good way to get my foot in the proverbial door and get access to discounts? how difficult is it to get a job with them? do they hire part-time employees?

anyone? anyone? :)

thank you...

Shari

All the Sephora girls I have seen "dress up". I assume if you work there you have an image they want you to uphold.

Are you interested in doing makeovers? Have you thought about going to school?

i have thought about going to school, but didn't think about it for too long... i've been playing with makeup for a while now. i just haven't done it as an "official" makeup artist.

i've done image consulting, makeup being an essential element in it. i've also done stage type fantasy-driven makeup. i've also done some hair.

A manager at the Mac counter mentioned to me one day that it wasn't too hard to get work at Sephora. She was hiring and was talking about a girl that worked at Sephora wanting to work for her. She talked about it like it was a stepping stone to working at a department store counter. I think you will have to dress up for any job that is selling image, but probably not as much for Sephora as you would for Nordstroms.

    hey shari-

a few things my friend who worked at Sephora told me: black suit every day, white or red nail polish every day, and a very strict working enviroment. My friend worked for MAC for a while and really liked it, and also Stila and liked it. More relaxed, more fun.

wow... thank you all for your responses! :)

i went to about 4 different Sephora locations in NYC, and they had all the floor people wearing red t-shirts (Sephora-issue) with black pants. there were some people who were wearing black suits (about 2 -3 as compared to over 10 red t-shirts in one store), so i asked one of the employees why the different outfits. i got some vague answer, but i think (based on the demeanor of the people) that the black suits were the management, and the red t-shirts were the sales associates. at another location i asked a girl (red t-shirt) if they all were allowed to do makeovers, and she said that they were. she also said that she started out as a cashier and they put her on the foor... i guess they're expanding so quickly they can't keep up...? she said that they all are able to and allowed to do makeovers....

is this the case in other cities too...? (sorry so wordy)

also, how does one get to work for MAC and Stila? my impression of MAC is that they're really bitchy, snooty, and catty... not to mention too image conscious...? but the real question being, how does one get to work for them?

all i really want is to help people feel and look beautiful... and have fun doing it. *sigh*...

ok, in case anyone is interested, i just found out why the red t-shirts and black suits. apparently they're promoting sephora.com - hence the t-shirts that have that printed on them. the black suits are company issued. fine polyester. oy. ;)

          about MAC:

I looked into doing makeup for them a few months ago and I talked to some of the artists. After filling out a basic application, they call you in for a test makeup run. You bring in your model and they present you with a scenario- "This person is conservative, but wants to try something a little funky. She is going out to dinner with her parents, though. How would you do her makeup?" Then you will do the makeup on your model in front of a few people who watch specifically what brushes you use and where and how. They train you once you are hired, but they want you to be a good makeup artist and have a very good understanding of brushes and depth of color.

that makes sense. do you/does anyone know if Sephora does the same thing...? i just want to keep all options open at this point, and i'd like to go into it with as much info as possible.

(btw, this is soooo cool!! you all are so incredibly generous with your advice, tips, etc! thank you!! and i'd LOVE to practice on anyone who's interested! anyone in NYC, of course.)

You don't have to work at a store to get discounts, MAC, Make-up Forever, Philosophy, all offer industry discounts to artists. In some cases you need a portfolio, others just want to see a business card or union card. It all depends on who you're asking. I got my PPID card at MAC in L.A. with just my business card, when I went into Make-up Forever the first time they wanted a union card, same location second time just a business card. For Philosophy I just emailed the company via the website and was offered a 45% discount. I would never encourage anyone to work retail for the discount... I hated retail, and looking back on it the discount wasn't worth it. I'm sure that if you wrote a few companies you'd find most are open to providing artists nice discounts. Good Luck, You're hearts in the right place.
